President Maithripala Sirisena planted a sapling, of a fruit tree at the auspicious time 11:17am to perform a new tradition included in the “Nakath Seetuwa” of this year’s Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
The President’s Media Division said President Sirisena clad in white and while facing the East planted the sapling at the President’s official residence.
President Maithripala Sirisena also requested all citizens to plant a sapling or a seed at today’s auspicious time, and urged citizens to fulfil their responsibility to mother earth by planting a sapling.
President Sirisena highlighted the importance of environmental conservation claiming it is adhered world over. Saplings of indigenous trees such as Nedun, Satinwood, Na and Kumbuk were distributed by the Department of Forest Conservation to be planted island-wide.
