President returns to SL following India visit

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa arrived in the island last night after concluding his two-day state visit to India.

During his stay, President Rajapaksa held discussions with his Indian counterpart President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior Indian government officials.

The President’s Media Division said President Rajapaksa also visited the Office of the Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi yesterday and planted a tree sapling to mark the occasion.

President Rajapaksa held discussions with officials on the importance of performing diplomatic functions in order to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting was attended by the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India Austin Fernando and the staff of the High Commission.

The President also met the Chairman of the Mahabodhi Society and the Chief Incumbent of Sanchi Chethiyagiri Viharaya Ven. Banagala Upatissa Thera.

The PMD reported that the current status of the Sanchi Chethiyagiri Vihara and its future development work was discussed while the venerable stressed on the need to display information of the temple in Sinhala for the benefit of pilgrims.

The venerable also expressed views on measures taken to construct a training centre for Indian novice monks.

A meeting between President Rajapaksa and National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party Ram Madhav was also held yesterday.
