The Government Medical Officers Association has requested President Maithripala Sirisena to sanction a comprehensive investigation into charges levelled by various individuals against the importation of substandard milk powder.
In a letter to the President the GMOA said Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Buddhika Pathirana raised the matter in Parliament and expressed his concerns over the circulation of substandard milk powder.
The GMOA meanwhile noted a number of complaints have been lodged with the Consumer Affairs Authority claiming that palm oil and pig extracts have been used to produce milk powder replacing milk fat.
Therefore the Association requested the Head of State to launch a prompt investigation to determine the contents of the imported milk powder circulated in the domestic market.
The GMOA has also called for an investigation into possible links between former and present officials of the Health Ministry and milk powder manufacturing companies.
