Protect freedom of Speech: MPs sign petition

Members of the Opposition have handed over a signed petition to the Speaker of House demanding their right to freedom of speech be protected within Parliament.
The Opposition stress President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s response to a recent statement made in Parliament by Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Harin Fernando had a significant impact on MPs right to freedom of speech in the house.
Speaking at a meeting SJB MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara has directed the Speakers attention to how Government Ministers level accusations at Opposition MPs based on personal reasoning.
In response to said concerns Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said he has noticed incidents where MPs from both factions have levelled allegations on personal grounds, adding he would address the matter in future.
Parliamentarians Patali Champika Ranawaka, Rajitha Senaratne, Manusha Nanayakkara, Harin Fernando, Tissa Attanayake and a several other Opposition MPs were present at the meeting.
