A group of protestors of the Joint Health Workers Union stormed the Ministry of Health today.
A protest march was organised by the Union in Colombo today, with protestors breaking into the Ministry premises upon reaching the gates.
Video footage indicated the protestors defying security forces and entering the Ministry.
Junior staff of hospitals across the island are engaged in a sick note campaign based on 11 demands.
Speaking to NewsRadio General Secretary of the Union Tampitiye Sugathananda speaking to media prior to entering the Health Ministry premises said the former and present governments have failed to provide solutions to their demands over the years.
Sugathananda Thera said the Health Ministry and the government have not intervened to solve their grievances.
The Thera said minor staff work 48 hours a week including Saturday, and called for an allowance to be granted for the additional working day including for staff members to be made permanent.
A discussion is meanwhile due to be held between Acting Minister of Health Prof. Channa Jayasumana and health authorities including representatives of the Joint Health Workers Union.
