‘Public must decide on dual citizen politicians’

Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Udaya Gammanpila says Ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Vasudeva Nanayakkara are of the stance that dual citizens should not be allowed to enter politics in Sri Lanka.
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing the Minister said the two Ministers have informed of their stance to the President and Prime Minister.
Minister Gammanpila said it was clearly stated in the letters by the National Freedom Front, the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya and the Democratic Leftist Front that they were against appointing dual citizens.
He revealed the Cabinet of Ministers discussed the issue at length yesterday, adding that many issues were resolved peacefully during talks.
Minister Gammanpila noted, there were a few unresolved issues, that they hope to discuss further.
Meanwhile Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella joining the media briefing said the decision on allowing dual citizenship holders to enter Parliament must be reached by the public.
Minister Rambukwella said a public referendum on the matter would be viable.
The Minister also said the government is seeking to formulate a new Constitution adding that an expert committee has been appointed to look into the matter.
Minister Rambukwella was hopeful a draft will be available within the next six months.
