Pujith, Hemasiri granted bail

Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara who was sent on mandatory leave and Former Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Hemasiri Fernando, who were arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department have been granted bail.
NewsRadio Court Correspondent said Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne released the duo on a 500,000 rupee surety bail each.
Former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and IGP Pujith Jayasundara who is on compulsory leave, were arrested by the CID on the 2nd of July.
Former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando was arrested while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital and IGP Pujith Jayasundara was apprehended at the Police Hospital in Narahenpita by the CID on the 2nd of July.
The development comes as the Attorney General on the 27th of June issued directives to Acting Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickremeratne, to name IGP Pujith Jayasundara and Former Secretary of Defence Hemasiri Fernando, as persons of interest for failing to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks.
The CID is conducting a criminal investigation into the April 21st attacks and persons of interest are to be charged under the criminal code.
