Former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says the Rajapaksa camp is focused on abolishing independent commissions and leading the country once again towards a nepotistic rule.

Addressing a media briefing today Ranawaka said the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was supported by the Mahinda Rajapaksa faction at the time.

He said the government repeatedly said that the 19th Amendment must be abolished, adding that Mahinda Rajapaksa is one individual who voted for the 19th Amendment.

Ranawaka said when looking at the composition of Parliament at the time, the United National Party had 44 seats while 143 were with Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He noted that the 19th Amendment was passed with a two thirds majority and was passed thanks to Mahinda Rajapaksa’s group.

He charged that the government’s main intention is to abolish independent commissions, and to appoint family members to various posts including the justice system.

The Former Minister said the Police Commission will have to bow to politicisation in future.
