Ranjan files petition against UNP expulsion

Former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake has filed a petition at the Colombo District Court seeking an interim injunction order against his expulsion from the United National Party by the party Working Committee without a disciplinary inquiry.

petition calls for an order to suspend the enforcement of the expulsion order until the hearing of the petition is completed.

The petition cited party leader former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, General Secretary of the UNP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, UNP Deputy Leader Ravi Karunanayake and several others as respondents.

Ranjan Ramanayake and 53 other UNP members were expelled form the party on the 27th of July for filing nominations from other political parties at the 2020 General Election.

Ranjan Ramanayake’s petition also calls for a Rs.10 million compensation fee from the UNP for the damages to his reputation as a result of the party’s decision.
