Rescue efforts continue at Kandy Collapse

Police say efforts continue to rescue a couple, buried under the rubble of after a five-storey building that collapsed onto a house in Buwelikada, Kandy.

A one-and-a-half-month-old infant who was rescued by Police and was admitted to the Kandy National Hospital passed away this morning.

The mother and father of the infant are still missing.

The mother is a lecturer of the Badulla Open University and a lawyer by profession.

The father has been identified as a hotel owner in Kandy.

Five persons were at the house at the time of the incident.

Police initially rescued two women who were trapped under the debris.

The Army, Police, Disaster Management teams and area residents are assisting in rescue efforts.

Kandy Senior Superintendent of Police Sudath Masinghe believes the incident had occurred, due to a landslide as a result of the incessant rain during the past few days.

The SSP noted the building collapse was reported around 5 this morning.

Due to the prompt response, the SSP noted they were able to rescue the two females from the debris.
