Rishad Bathiudeen remanded till 27 Oct.

Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department this morning, has been remanded.

The order was issued by the Colombo Fort Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage. The MP was accordingly remanded till the 27th of October.

MP Bathiudeen was arrested on charges of criminal misappropriation of public funds and violation of election laws over the transportation of internally displaced persons in Sri Lanka Transport Board owned buses during the 2019 Presidential Election.

The Attorney General last week instructed Police to obtain a warrant for the arrest of MP Bathiudeen and two others. Following a determination by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court the Attorney General advised Police to proceed with the arrests.

An accountant among the group was arrested in Kirulapone last week, and was remanded until the 26th of October.

The MP was arrested after six days while at an apartment complex down Ebenezer Place, Dehiwala this morning.

Seven individuals were arrested earlier by the Criminal Investigations Department for aiding MP Rishad Bathiudeen to evade arrest.

MP Bathiudeen is being charged on violating section 387 of the Criminal Code and section five of the Public Property Act and also for the violation of section 82 and 86 of the Presidential Election Act.
