The Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation has been placed under the Ministry of Defence through a Presidential proclamation.
The Extraordinary Gazette notification in this regard was issued last night.
The Extraordinary Gazette issued by President Maithripala Sirisena stated through powers vested in the President under Paragraph (1) of Article 43 and Paragraph (1)(a) of Article 46 of the Constitution, the Head of State has ammended the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Act, No. 6 of 1982.
Responding to the development, Minister of Mass Media Ruwan Wijewardene said the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation is operating at a loss and for months he has been attempting to change the management.
Minister Ruwan Wijewardene said the President had obstructed the move to overhaul the management for months and placing the Rupavahini Corporation under the Defence Ministry is the latest attempt to undermine his move to transform the body into a profit-making entity.
SLRC is operating at a loss. Through Treasury, tax payers have been funding SLRC’s salary bill of Rs 40m per month. For months I’ve been trying to change the management but was obstructed by the president. Latest attempt resulted in @MaithripalaS gazetting SLRC under his purview.
