SC hearing on 20A to continue on Friday

The consideration of the 39 special determination petitions filed challenging the draft bill of the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution concluded for the second day, this evening.
Accordingly, further consideration of the petitions will commence at 9.30am on Friday. NewsRadio court correspondent said submissions have been made on behalf of 32 petitioners, thus far.
The petitions were considered for the second day this morning before a five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and Justices Buwaneka Aluwihare, Sisira De Abrew, Priyantha Jayawardena and Vijith Malalgoda.
The petitions were taken up for consideration for the first time yesterday and attorneys representing the petitioners presented their submissions.
The five-member Supreme Court bench has also announced that it expects to conclude the consideration of the petitions by Friday.
39 special determination petitions had been filed before the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
The petitioners are seeking a declaration that the proposed bill in whole or in part requires the approval of voters at a public referendum and also requires a two-thirds majority in Parliament.
The determination of the Supreme Court will be conveyed to the President and the Speaker of Parliament.
