The Supreme Court today decided to consider the Fundamental Rights Petitions filed against the regulation mandating the cremation of the remains of COVID-19 infected deceased, on the 30th of November.
The announcement was made by a Tribunal of Justices consisting Buwaneka Aluwihare, Sisira de Abrew and Gamini Amarasekara.
The petition was filed by several persons including Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen, claiming that cremation is against their religion.
The petitioners also highlight the fact that even the World Health Organization has not mandated the cremation of the remains of COVID-19 victims.
