SC upholds Duminda Silva’s death sentence

A five member bench of the Supreme Court today upheld the death sentence issued by the Colombo High Court against Former Parliamentarian Duminda Silva and two others.
The verdict was issued when the appeal filed by the suspects in the case including the former Parliamentarian was taken up for hearing today.
The death sentenced issued against Chaminda Ravi Jayanath and Sarath Bandara, was also upheld.
Meanwhile NewsRadio Court correspondent said the first suspect in the case Anura Thushara De Mel was acquitted and released by Court.
The five member bench comprised Chief Justice Priyasad Dep, and Judges Buwaneka Aluwihare, Prasanna Jayawardene, Nalin Perera and Vijith Malalgoda.
The Colombo High Court found Former MP Duminda Silva and four others guilty of murdering five persons including former Parliamentarian Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra on the 8th of October 2011.
The Colombo High Court accordingly sentenced the five persons to death on the 8th of September 2016.
The death sentence was delivered after the bench was split on the verdict with three judges finding the suspects guilty and two judges against.
Meanwhile it was revealed that one out of five suspects has disappeared during the time period of the hearing.
