Schools urged to speak in English weekly

The Minister of Education has instructed all schools across the island to communicate in English once a week.
The aim of the programme is to improve English skills of school students in order to achieve global education targets.
Additionally a new circular and guidelines have been issued to teachers to engage in teaching by making the most use of the syllabus provided by the National Institute of Education.
The Education Ministry said a programme has also been initiated to test the English speaking and listening skills of students.
Meanwhile the Ministry has decided to commence the distribution of government text books for 2020 on the 16th of August.
The government has incurred a cost of 4,165 million rupees in order to distribute the free text books for next year with 43 million copies of 448 different books to be distributed to students.
