Seven held for aiding MP Rishad to evade arrest

Police say seven more individuals have been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department for aiding Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen to evade arrest.
Acting Police Media Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana said two suspects were arrested in Wellampitiya on Saturday, and upon detaining and questioning the duo, information was revealed of MP Bathiudeen’s whereabouts.
The DIG said the Parliamentarian was at a residence in Kalubowila, Kohuwela for two days and on the 15th had travelled to a residence in Dehiwela.
DIG Ajith Rohana said among the suspects were a couple, including a doctor, a foreign agency representative and a secretary of the MP were also arrested.
He added the foreign agency representative, who was arrested in Addalaichenai, was identified to have assisted MP Bathiudeen in travelling from Kohuwala to Dehiwela.
He noted that the seven suspects will be produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrates Court today on the charge of aiding and abetting a wanted individual.
The DIG added MP Bathiudeen will be charged under the Public Properties Act and the Penal Code.
The Attorney General last week ordered Police to arrest MP Bathiudeen on charges of criminal misappropriation of public funds and violation of election laws over the transportation of internally displaced persons in Sri Lanka Transport Board owned buses during the 2019 Presidential Election.
The Attorney General instructed Police to obtain a warrant to arrest MP Bathiudeen and two others.
Two of the three suspects, MP Bathiudeen and his accountant have been arrested, with the accountant presently in remand custody till the 26th of October.
The vehicle used to transport the MP has also been seized.
MP Bathiudeen was arrested at an apartment complex down Ebenezer Place, Dehiwala this morning by the CID.
The Acting Police Media Spokesman added several more suspects are due to be arrested over the incident.
DIG Ajith Rohana said the Criminal Investigations Department is conducting further investigations.
