The Samagi Jana Balawegaya had organized a silent protest today in opposition over President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s response to MP Harin Fernando’s statement in Parliament.

The protest was organized at the Independence square under the theme of protecting ones right to freedom of speech.

Speaking at the event, Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa said he will direct special attention towards the government’s plan to ensure the security of Parliamentarian Harin Fernando.

He claimed it was every elected official’s right to express their thoughts and ideas within and outside of Parliament.

The MP stressed that Harin Fernando was merely expressing himself and it was wrong to threaten his life for it.

The Opposition Leader stressed they would work hard to protect those basic rights.

Meanwhile the Opposition Leader also addressed MP Ranjan Ramanayake’s plight at the venue as well.

MP Sajith Premadasa assured that he will take all possible measures to secure the Parliament seat of MP Ramanayake.

While stressing he would not attempt to criticise a Court decision, the Opposition Leader nevertheless stressed they hope to challenge the matter legally.

MP Premadasa also stressed that nobody could take away MP Ramanayake’s seat Constitutionally.

The MP claimed Ranjan Ramanayake was a respected Politician who spoke the truth and therefore said the party would stand beside him during this challenge.
