Minister of Justice Thalatha Athukorala says Sri Lanka is lately being recognised as a country that has high profile criminals.

Speaking at an event in Colombo the Minister said a majority of women in prisons are serving sentences for the possession of narcotics.

Minister Athukorala noted this is an issue faced across the world. The Minister said all countries, including developed nations, face similar issues within prisons.

The Justice Minister said Sri Lanka at one point was known for the 30 year long conflict with the LTTE and is today known for the increasing number of underworld gang members.
