Sovereignty will not be compromised -President

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says he will not sacrifice the independence, sovereignty or the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka in order to ensure cordial relations with international partners.

President Rajapaksa made this observation during discussions with Secretary of State of the United States Mike Pompeo.

The two parties held discussions today at the Presidential Secretariat.

President Rajapaksa has stressed that Sri Lanka will follow a neutral foreign policy during his term in office.

The President’s Media Division in a statement said the Head of State has said China during the post-war period had supported Sri Lanka in its infrastructure projects, but the country is not in a debt trap at present.

The President has said Sri Lanka’s foreign ties will depend on several matters and the priority will be given to improve traditional and cultural relations and also areas concerning the development of the country.

During the discussion, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that the United States is prepared to support Sri Lanka to reach its economic targets and also to achieve suitable development.

Mike Pompeo has emphasised the importance to continuing to improve bilateral ties between the two countries.
