Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to China Dr. Palitha Kohona says Sri Lanka will under no circumstance intervene in conflicts between China and the United States.
Speaking to media in Chilaw after an event the Ambassador said Sri Lanka has always maintained a non-aligned foreign policy which will continue to be enforced.
He noted that conflicts between China and the US are not the responsibility of Sri Lanka adding that the country’s wellbeing, freedom, sovereignty and independence will always be protected.
Dr. Kohona added that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has a clear foreign policy, that is non-aligned and neutral.
The Ambassador to China meanwhile claimed that ties between Sri Lanka and China date back 2,000 years adding that China has supported Sri Lanka at all times financially for development, during the conflict with the LTTE and even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Palitha Kohona emphasized that ties between two countries cannot be considered as being under the influence of one country.
He noted that at a time that China was isolated by the rest of the world, Sri Lanka stood by China.
He reiterated that Sri Lanka and China will continue to maintain ties as two independent and sovereign states.
