‘SLPP proposals may lead to political meddling in education’

Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has charged that proposals included in the election manifesto of Presidential candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna could lead to unnecessary political interference in the education sector.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Ministry premises, Minister Kariyawasam said the Opposition of attempting to remove the Z score for university entrance.

He said students from rural schools will find it difficult to enter universities through a new scientific method, adding however the country’s cream of the crop must be granted university entrance.

The Minister said there might be certain differences at district levels, but that needs to be controlled as much as possible and the best team must be selected.

Therefore he expressed strong criticism of any such proposals.

Minister Kariyawasam said if students are admitted in such a manner through schools, it may surely lead to political interference, further questioning as to how such decisions can be taken in rural schools and how will guidelines be set.
