Minister of Mass Media Ruwan Wijewardene in a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena has expressed his regret in the President’s decision to vest the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation under the Ministry of Defence.

The Minister said even during the height of the war, SLRC was not placed under the Defence Ministry.

He said the reasons that were given for the sudden move cannot be justified, as in the past four years, no interest was shown by the President to use the station to achieve those objectives.

Minister Wijewardene in his letter stated that the President’s actions can be construed as a move against media freedom in the country claiming that the step has been taken arbitrarily, with no consultation with the Minister in charge of the subject.

The Minister went on to say that since taking over the Ministry of Mass Media in February this year, he attempted to appoint an efficient, talented, and suitable person as Chairman of the Corporation, claiming that the President objected to all the nominees, citing various reasons.

The Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation was brought under the purview of the Ministry of Defence by an Extraordinary Gazette notification on Monday.
