Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera says he has not noticed major environmental damages in the country as depicted on social media platforms.
Speaking during a media briefing held at the Department of Government Information, Minister Amaraweera noted that a majority of the posts circulated on social media platforms are inaccurate.
Minister Amaraweera claimed that after noticing the discussion on social media pertaining to the environment destruction, he conducted an investigation on the matter as well.
In most cases, the Environment Minister pointed out that posts were created by users to discredit the government.
He also challenged Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa to an open debate over the alleged claims on deforestation.
In reality, Minister Amaraweera noted that only four incidents of forest destruction were reported, where only one incident is connected to a politician.
He claimed that legal action has been taken against all parties involved, despite their ranks in government or connections.
