Speaker to follow precedence set by British Parliament

Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena says Parliament sittings will not be suspended despite the current COVID-19 threat.
In response to concerns raised by the opposition during this morning’s Parliament sitting, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said the British Parliament functioned even during the second world war.
He therefore said all safety measures will be taken to ensure the continuation of Parliament sittings.
The Speaker noted that even Parliaments across the world are holding sittings at present, by adhering to health and safety protocols.
He therefore requested all factions to cooperate with authorities to ensure the safety of MPs.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena addressing Parliament said safety concerns should be directed through party leaders and assured to provide suitable solutions.
