Opposition Parliamentarians today demanded Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to issue a clear order and permit Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake to attend tomorrow’s Parliament sittings.
Opposition MPs were of the view that the life of MP Ramanayake who is currently serving a jail sentence at the Angunukolapelessa prison is under threat.
Accordingly, the opposition wanted the Speaker to intervene and transfer MP Ramanayake to a prison in Colombo.
The opposition claimed that Ranjan Ramanayake still remains a Member of Parliament and therefore his privileges should be protected.
The Speaker in response maintained that since a determination has been issued pertaining to MP Ramanayake, further ruling cannot be made on the matter.
Despite repeated calls by opposition MPs, the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker did not issue an order pertaining to MP Ramanayake during today’s sitting.
Meanwhile, State Minister Lohan Ratwatte in Parliament said he will take full responsibility to provide security to Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake who is currently serving a jail sentence at the Angunukolapelessa prison.
He said a separate cell has been given to Ramanayake and all necessary steps have been taken to provide him with additional security.
