The Ministry of Transport has directed attention towards formulating a transportation policy for the safety of the public amidst the coronavirus.

State Minister Dilum Amunugama speaking at a media briefing said the policy will be formulated based on directives issued by health authorities pertaining to controlling the spread of COVID-19.

The State Minister also hinted at a possible increase in fares in public transport.

He said the outbreak will continue for the days to come, adding that the transportation plan will help commuters travel and continue day to day activities.

State Minister Amunugama stressed, if health authorities urge social distancing of commuters in public transport, fares will have to be increased.

He said bus owners will be obliged to cover costs as a result of a drastic reduction in the number of commuters.

However, the State Minister added the prices will be reduced in the event the threat of COVID-19 decreases.
