Two customs officers test positive for COVID-19

Two Customs inspectors engaged in duty at the new container gate of the main entrance to the Colombo Port have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Customs Media Spokesman Additional Customs Director General Sunil Jayaratne speaking to NewsRadio said the Customs will only offload essential goods during the next few days.

Jayaratne said all goods that are cleared are taken out from the main entrance, adding that inspections take place in three docks in Orugodawatte.

He noted that all staff were removed from the premises with 25 persons directed to quarantine and some to hospitals.

Sunil Jayaratne also requested the public to refrain from visiting the Sri Lanka Customs Headquarters and to obtain online services adding that documents and payments can be submitted via the online platform.

He claimed that coronavirus preventative steps taken during the first outbreak in the country is currently in effect.

The Additional Customs Director said goods identified as low risk are being scanned and released at present.
