Udayanga Weeratunga arrested

The Police says Former Sri Lanka Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department this morning at the Bandaranaike International Airport, will be produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today.
He was arrested by the CID upon his arrival in the country around 4:45 this morning.
The Police said Weeratunga was arrested by the CID over investigations into the case related to the purchase of four MiG27 aircraft for the Sri Lanka Air Force in 2006.
The CID initially detained Udayanga Weeratunga at the BIA for questioning and subsequently arrested him. Initial investigations into the case was launched by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division under the Money Laundering Act.
Warrants were issued for his arrest by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court and the Interpol over the failure to appear before Court on several occasions.
The warrants were issued on the 20th of October 2016.
An order was issued in January 2018 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court preventing the sale, transfer or lease of two houses belonging to Weeratunga in Dompe and a luxury upstairs house in Borella.
Udayanga Weeratunga was arrested at the Dubai International Airport on the 4th of February 2018 while attempting to leave for the United States.
However, Weeratunga could not be extradited as an extradition agreement is not in place between Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates.
