Former Sri Lanka Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga has been further remanded till the 26th of February.

The order was issued by Colombo Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake today. Udayanga Weeratunga was arrested last Friday by the Criminal Investigations Department at the Bandaranaike International Airport, upon his arrival in the country.

Weeratunga was arrested by the CID over investigations into the case related to the purchase of four MiG27 aircraft for the Sri Lanka Air Force in 2006.

The CID initially detained Udayanga Weeratunga at the BIA for questioning and subsequently arrested him.

Initial investigations into the case were launched by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division under the Money Laundering Act.

Warrants were issued for his arrest by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court and the Interpol over the failure to appear before Court on several occasions.
