Udayanga Weeratunga remanded till Monday

Former Sri Lanka Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga, who was arrested this morning, has been remanded.
Weeratunga was remanded till the 17th of February after being produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court this evening.
The order was issued by Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake. Udayanga Weeratunga, was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department this morning at the Bandaranaike International Airport, upon his arrival in the country around 4:45 this morning.
Weeratunga was arrested by the CID over investigations into the case related to the purchase of four MiG27 aircraft for the Sri Lanka Air Force in 2006.
The CID initially detained Udayanga Weeratunga at the BIA for questioning and subsequently arrested him.
Initial investigations into the case was launched by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division under the Money Laundering Act.
Warrants were issued for his arrest by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court and the Interpol over the failure to appear before Court on several occasions.
