The Jathika Hela Urumaya says they will not support the appointment of the Presidential candidate of the United National Party led alliance based on the preference of the UNP Working Committee.
Issuing a statement, the JHU said the selection of the Presidential candidate should be carried out based on two principles.
The party cited the two principles as prioritising the safety of democracy claiming it should be a collective decision of all parties representing the United National Front.
The statement noted the best method is to allow the Parliamentary Group of the United National Front to decide on the Presidential candidate.
The JHU stressed concerns over democracy may arise if the Working Committee of the UNP decides on a candidate without considering the opinion of all parties.
Therefore, the Jathika Hela Urumaya through its statement urged all leaders of the UNF including Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to immediately convene the Working Committee of the UNF and appoint the Presidential candidate.
