United National Party Parliamentarian Bandula Lal Bandarigoda says the proposed UNP-led opposition alliance is unwilling to contest the General Election under the symbol of the elephant under a namesake coalition.
Speaking at a media briefing in Galle, MP Bandarigoda said his faction will contest the election under the symbol of the elephant, if members of the UNP grant Parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa complete powers.
He said, despite claims made by certain persons, his faction has notified that they have no concerns over the symbol of the elephant being used, at the upcoming General Election.
MP Bandarigoda noted that the General Secretary of the UNP should inform the Election Commission in writing, to grant approval to use the symbol of the elephant for the Samagi Janabala Wegaya adding that such move will facilitate all factions to contest the upcoming election under the symbol of the elephant.
The Parliamentarian claimed that some individuals are trying to hide behind the symbol of the elephant, and head down the same old journey.
He therefore urged all factions to unite and contest the election under a broad alliance.
Parliamentarian Bandula Lal Bandarigoda added that members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna are afraid of the proposed opposition alliance.
He claimed that his faction will contest under the symbol of the heart if there is no room for the elephant symbol to be used at the next election.
