The Opposition claims that the country’s economy will not be strengthened by merely limiting imports.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said the country will face a huge shortage of essential commodities in future, and it will further escalate the issues faced by the general public.

He said Sri Lanka has to deal with international partners cordially and decisions such as limiting the importation of essential commodities should be taken only after a detailed assessment.

MP Attanayake noted that several local industries also depend on raw materials imported from various nations adding that by limiting such products, local manufactures will face difficulties to maintain their establishments.

He claimed that the decision to limit imports of certain goods will adversely impact the domestic job market and the economy in general.
