President Maithripala Sirisena claims although he was advised that he has the authority to ignore summons issued by the Parliament Select Committee probing the Easter Sunday attacks, as a leader who respects democracy, he decided to appear before the Committee.

President Sirisena said the Attorney General advised him that as the Head of State he can use his discretion to respond to summons issued by the Select Committee.

The President said he agreed to appear before the Select Committee as a matter of national importance and considering national security. President Sirisena made his observation while attending the progress meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security in Parliament.

The Committee meeting was significant, as it was the first occasion in the history of the Sri Lanka Parliament that a President attended a Parliament Committee meeting.

During the meeting, the President instructed the Committee to amend and enact new laws to foil terror activities.

President Sirisena said decisions pertaining to national security should not be delayed under any circumstances.

The Head of State also noted that it is the responsibility of all factions to take steps to prevent a terror attack like that witnessed in the country on the 21st of April.
