The Sri Lanka Railways Department says a programme to allocate separate train compartments for women only will be introduced in future.
Speaking to NewsRadio Railways General Manager Dilantha Fernando said accordingly from the 1st of March onwards, six office trains will each have a single compartment segregated for women to travel in.
The initiative is being introduced in line with International Women’s day which also falls on the 8th of March.
Accordingly the plan will be introduced on three trains plying along the main line, two trains along the coastal line and one train on the Puttalam route.
Furthermore identifiable signs boards will be introduced on the relevant train compartments indicating only women will be allowed to travel in them.
