Reckless bus driver gets 37 year in prison


A Bus driver charged with reckless driving which resulted in the death of 14 individuals has been sentenced to a 37 and a half year rigorous prison term by the Kurunegala High court.

The verdict was pronounced today, after the case was heard over a span of ten years.

The verdict was issued by Kurunegala High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundara.

14 Individuals were killed and 40 others sustained injuries in the accident reported on the 4th of July 2003.

The suspect was registered at the Kurunegala North Bus Depot.

Indictments were filed against the suspect for reckless driving that resulted in culpable Homicide. NewsRadio Court Correspondent said 76 witnesses testified against the accused.
