The Bangladesh Women’s Cricket team beat Sri Lanka by two-runs in a nail-biting final to take gold in the discipline at the 13th South Asian Games in Pokhara, Nepal today.
Sent in to bat, Bangladesh was restricted to 91-8 in their 20 overs with Nigar Sultan making the highest total with an unbeaten 29.
An economical bowling show by the Bangladesh side restricted Sri Lanka to 89-9 to bring home the first ever gold medal in women’s cricket.
Umesha Thimashini took four wickets to reduce Bangladesh to 36-5 in just seven overs but Nigar and Fahima Khatun made important contributions to help their side post a total they could defend.
In reply, the Lankan batters were kept under a tight leash, with Nahida Akter leading the charge for the Bangladeshi bowlers.
Sri Lanka were favourites to win the match going into the final over, needing seven runs to win.
