CR&FC qualify for League Super Cup round

CR & FC reclaimed the second position in the Inter-Club Rugby League Tournament Points Table after recording a hard-fought 31-22 win over Sri Lanka Army, in Welisera this evening.
CR raced to a 17-00 lead after Saranga Weerasinghe and Murshid Zubair planted tries early on before veteran Sharo Fernando was yellow carded on the 30th minute of the game.
Full back Isuru Madagedara then secured the first points for the Army side on the 33th minute.
Janindu Dilshan planted the third try of the game for CR at the stroke of halftime, as the visitors led 22-05 at lemons.
The commencement of the second half saw a flurry of attacks by the soldiers in an attempt to bridge the gap.
Although, Army failed to convert pressure into points, the home team played most of the game on the opponent’s territory.
On the 47th minute of the encounter, Refree Ishanka Abeykoon showed the second yellow card for CR’s Sharo Fernando, ending the veteran’s participation in the game for the evening.
With more than 30 minutes remaining on the clock, Army capitalized on the numbers advantage to score three pivotal tries.
However a hat trick of penalties by Full back Rizah Mubarak helped CR seal the win at the scenic Welisara grounds.
The ninth win of the season for CR also helped them secure a place in the Super round of the tournament.
Army’s defeat also meant Police SC claimed a place in the Super round of the League.
Havelock SC, Army and Navy Sports Club will now battle-it out to secure the final place in the Super round during the next three weeks of the 2019/2020 Inter-Club Rugby League Tournament.
