England in command in Galle

England ended Day 1 of the First test against Sri Lanka in a commanding position in Galle this evening.

At stumps, England were on 127 for 2, trailing by only 8 runs.

Skipper Joe Root remained unbeaten on 66 while Jonny Bairstow was on 47.

Lasith Embuldeniya picked up both wickets to fall in the England innings, ending the day on 2 for 55.

He removed openers Zak Crawly for 9 and Dom Sibley for 4 runs. Earlier this morning, stand in captain Dinesh Chandimal won the toss and elected to bat first.

However, the Lankans were bundled out for 135. Chandimal top scored with 28 while Angle Mathews scored 27 runs.

Dasun Shanaka and Kusal Perera also made 20s.

For the visitors, Dom Bess picked up 5 for 30 while Stuart Broad had figures of 3 for 20.

The Day 2 of the first test will resume at 10am tomorrow at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
