England post mammoth 421 runs in 1st innings

Skipper Joe Root scored his fourth double century in his career to help England post a mammoth 421 runs in the first innings of the first test match against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium.

Root scored 228 before he was dismissed by Dilruwan Perera. Debuttant Dan Lawrence ably supported his skipper with a 150-ball 73.

Jonny Bairstow scored 47 while Jos Buttler hit 30 runs during the first innings of the visitors.

For Sri Lanka, Dilruwan Perera had the best returns with 4/109 while Lasith Embuldeniya picked up three wickets conceding 176 runs.

Paceman Asitha Fernand had figures of 2/44. Sri Lanka was bundled out for a paltry 135 after opting to bat first on the op-ening day.

Skipper Dinesh Chandimal top scored with 28 while Angleo Mathews made 27.

England has a lead of 285 and will be favourites to claim the series opener although rain interrupted the majority of yesterday’s play.

More rain has been predicted over Galle skies for this evening and tomorrow as well.
