Under-fire Sri Lanka Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha has pinned his hopes on four key players during the tour of South Africa.
Head Coach Hathurusingha is expecting another tough assignment on the road starting tomorrow in Durban.
Sri Lanka is slated to play two Test matches, five ODIs and three Twenty20 International encounters during the tour of South Africa.
Despite being one of the most challenging places for a visiting side, the national selectors have named an inexperienced side sans regular skipper Dinesh Chandimal for the Test series.
While acknowledging he was surprised by the omission of Chandimal, Head Coach Hathurusingha said experience is the key to succeed in places like South Africa.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Hathurusingha added that Sri Lanka would heavily depend on the performances of stand-in captain Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella and Lahiru Thirimanne.
He said, “I’m relying on the players who have been with us. Dimuth Karunaratne is the captain, so he has to lead from the front. He’s one of the best batters with Kusal Mendis. Him, Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella, who is in good form, have to stand up. Lahiru Thirimanne who has come back into the team, has a lot of experience.”
The Lankan Head Coach also bemoaned what he perceived as lack of communication between the administration and the team management.
When asked about his expectations against the Proteas, a rather non-committed Sri Lankan Head Coach Hathurusingha said, he expects the players to raise their individual game against a tough unit.
Chandika Hathurusingha added that he has been motivating and backing the unit to do well during the past few months and said he will continue to back his unit during the tour of South Africa.
Sri Lanka will take on South Africa in the series opener in Durban from 1.30pm tomorrow.
