Kandy qualifies for the League Super Cup round after beating Navy.
Reigning Champions Kandy Sports Club defeated Sri Lanka Navy 39-28, to become the first team to qualify for the Super round of this season’s Inter-Club Rugby League Tournament in Welisera.
Navy raced to a 10-point lead after the opening exchanges, as Isuru Kongahawatta converted his own try and then put over a penalty.
Fly-half Srinath Sooriyabandara opened the scoring for the visitors, and then Jason Dissanayaka and Budhima Piyaratne planted tries before the halfway mark of the game.
For Navy, Isuru Kongahawatta put over two more penalties but Kandy had a slender 19-16 lead at lemons.
Experienced Radeesha Seneviratne scored the sailors’ only try of the second half while Dansha Dayan and Diluksha Dange crossed the line for Kandy to help them extend their unbeaten run.
Kandy now has 64 points in 11 outings and reign supreme at the top of the League Table while Police Sports Club and CR & FC remain second and third place, respectively.
Tomorrow, third-placed CR will take on Army Sports Club in the final game of the week in Welisera.
The game is scheduled to get underway at 4.15pm.
