Andre Russell smashed an explosive 19-ball 49 to spoil David Warner’s IPL comeback as Kolkata Knight Riders pulled off a dramatic six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad yesterday.
Needing 53 runs from last three overs, the powerful Jamaican changed the course of the match with his big-hitting against Siddharth Kaul, creaming 19 runs off an over.
He then scored 19 runs during Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s penultimate over as KKR sealed the 182-run chase with two balls to spare.
Russell hammered four sixes and an equal number of boundaries and then youngster Shubman Gill completed the formalities with two sixes off Shakib-Al-Hasan.
Earlier, Warner made a stupendous comeback with a scintillating 85, helping his side reach a challenging 181/3.
The Aussie smashed three sixes and nine boundaries in his 53-ball knock.
India World Cup probable Vijay Shankar also made a fine return with a quick-fire unbeaten 24-ball 40.
In the second game of the day, motivated by a 27-ball 78 by Rishabh Pant, bowlers produced a brilliant show to help Delhi Capitals start their campaign at the 2019 Indian Premier League with a 37-run win over Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium last night.
Ishant Sharma and Kagiso Rabada claimed two wickets each for Delhi Capitals as Mumbai Indians folded for 176 in the chase of 214 at their home ground.
Seasoned batsman Yuvraj Singh top-scored for Mumbai Indians with 53 runs in season’s first high-scoring encounter.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals rode on Rishabh Pant’s fireworks to score the first 200-plus total in the IPL 2019.
Pant raced to his half-century in 18 balls, hitting seven sixes and as many fours at the Wankhede Stadium.
Pant, playing his natural game, punished the Mumbai bowlers after South African Colin Ingram who scored 47 and Shikhar Dhawan with 43 pulled the visitors out of the rubble and laid the foundation of a big total with their 83-run stand for the third wicket.
