Andre Russell’s individual brilliance helped Colombo Kings defeat Galle Gladiators by 34 runs in a five-over shootout in the fourth 2020 Lanka Premier League Tournament game in Hambantota.
Three hours of rain over Hambantota skies resulted in the Twenty20 game reduced to a five overs a side match.
Galle Gladiators skipper Shahid Afridi won the all-important toss and put the Kings into bat.
West Indian powerhouse Russell opened the batting for the Kings and made his intention clear from the outset.
Russell notched up his 50 in just 14 deliveries and finished on 65 while England’s Laurie Evans scored 21 off 10 balls.
The pair put on 65 runs for the second wicket and helped post 96 in their allotted five overs.
Paceman Asitha Fernando had figures of 1 for 26 for the Gladiators.
Galle struggled to keep up with the run-rate as Danushka Gunathilaka and Skipper Afridi played unconventional shots.
Gunathilaka remained unbeaten on 30 off 15 balls while Afridi and Azam Khan notched up double digits scores but could not prevent Kings from registering their second win of the tournament.
The win also helped the Kings top the LPL Points Table with four points while win-less Galle is languishing at the bottom of the table.
The LPL games will resume tomorrow with two games scheduled in Hambantota at 3.30pm and 8pm.
