LPL 2020: Avishka & Jaffna sink Galle in Game Two

Avishka Fernando hit an unbeaten 92 to help Jaffna Stallions defeat Galle Gladiators by 8 wickets in the second game of the 2020 Lanka Premier League tournament in Hambantota.

22-year-old Fernando started slowly but went on to hit five 4s and seven 6s to finish on 92 off 63 balls.

Minod Bhanuka and Tom Moores scored 18 runs each for the Stallions but the third wicket stand between Fernando and experienced Shoaib Malik sealed the win for the Jaffna side led by Thisara Perera.

Fernando and Malik put on an unbeaten 110-run partnership to eclipse the target in 19.3 overs.

For Galle Gladiators Mohamed Amir and Mohamed Shiraz picked up a wicket apiece.

Earlier this evening, after opting to bat first, Galle Gladiators went on to post an above par 175/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Skipper Shahid Afridi top scored with 58 off just 23 deliveries. Afridi notched up his half century in just 20 deliveries and his innings comprised of three fours and six maximums.

Opener Danushka Gunathilaka contributed to the total with 38 off 30 balls.

For Jaffna Stallions South African Duanne Olivier had figures of 4 for 44 while Wanindu Hasaranga picked up 2 wickets conceding just 12 runs.

Meanwhile tomorrow, two LPL games will be worked-off in Hambantota.

Dambulla Viiking will take on Kandy Tuskers at 3.30pm while Colombo Kings will face Galle Gladiators at 8pm.

Yesterday, Colombo overcame Kandy in a nail-biting super over contest to kick-start the 2020 Lanka Premier League tournament.
