All round skills of Isuru Udana helped Colombo Kings secure a thrilling super over win against Kandy Tuskers in the opener of the 2020 Lanka Premier League in Hambantota.
The much awaited tournament got underway last evening with a colourful virtual opening ceremony which included the unveiling of the LPL trophy and a dedicated mobile application for the tournament.
On the pitch though, the two teams could not be separated after 40 overs of play as Kandy and Colombo both scored 219 runs each in their allotted 20 overs.
The game, the first international match in the COVID-19 era in Sri Lanka then went to a super over contest as the match continued past midnight.
Andre Russell, Angelo Mathews and Isuru Udana combined to score 16/1 in the super over for the Kings.
Isuru Udana then restricted the Kandy Tuskers to 12/0 to seal the win for the Colombo side.
Earlier last evening, Kings Skipper Angelo Mathews won the toss and put the Kandy side into bat.
Kusal Janith Perera who opened the batting with Afghanistan youngster Rahmanullah Gurbaz lit up the empty Hambantota stadium with some explosive hitting from the outset.
The pair put on 75 runs inside the power-play overs before Gurbaz was dismissed for 53 off 22. Kusal Mendis then joined Perera and the duo also put on a 50-plus runs partnership for the second wicket. Mendis scored 30 while late in the innings Asela Gunaratne contributed to the total with 33 off 20 deliveries.
Perera went onto to make 87 off just 52 deliveries to help Kandy Tuskers to post a commanding 219 for 3 in their allotted 20 overs. For the Kings, Qais Ahmad, Dushmantha Chameera and MS Gony picked up a wicket apiece.
During their chase, Dinesh Chandimal who opened for the Kings gave an early chance in the second over which was fluffed by the Tuskers fielders.
Chandimal and Laurie Evans helped by some fielding blunders put on 64 runs for the opening wicket and laid a perfect platform for the win.
Chandimal went onto make a free-flowing 80 off 46 deliveries. Double strike by Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq gave a much needed break for the Kandy side although it brought Angelo Mathews and West Indian powerhouse Andre Russell to the crease.
However, Mathews only lasted five deliveries providing the advantage to the Tuskers.
Russell made 24 in just 13 balls but could not take his team across the line. However, determined Isuru Udana played another brilliant cameo to score 34 off 12 balls and tied the opening contest of the 2020 LPL tournament.
Nuwan Pradeep was the pick of the bowlers for the Tuskers with figures of 2/34 while Naveen-ul-Haq had figure of 2/40.
Injury to veteran Irfan Pathan in the early part of the innings hurt the Tuskers who looked on course to win the 2020 LPL opener before Udana’s Twenty20 master class.
Meanwhile, later today, Galle Gladiators will take on Jaffna Stallions in the second game of the LPL 2020. The game will get underway at 8pm at the same venue.
