Tharanga leads SL Board XI to Windies defeat

Skipper Upul Tharanga spearheaded with an imposing century to guide the Sri Lanka Cricket Board XI to a two-wicket victory over the visiting West Indies unit in a warm up tour match at the P Sara Oval grounds yesterday.
Windies skipper Kieran Pollard won the toss and elected to bat first in the series opener.
The formidable visiting batting line-up went on to make 282 in 49.4 overs. Darren Bravo top scored for the Windies with a 88-ball 100 while Nicholas Pooran and Sunil Ambris scored 40s.
Cameos from Jason Holder and Fabian Allen them propelled the visitors to a competitive total against an inexperienced Sri Lankan line-up. 19-year-old Dilshan Madushanka was the pick of the bowlers for the host taking 3 for 47 while Asitha Fernando had figures of 2 for 17.
During the chase, Sri Lanka lost Sandun Weerakkody and Pathum Nissanka in the opening over of the innings.
However Tharanga joined by Asela Gunaratne put on 197 runs for the third wicket.
Tharanga went on to make 120 off 124 deliveries while Gunaratne managed 64 off 75 balls. Despite the loss of the two experienced men, the Lankans had enough in their cylinders to cross the line in the 48th over.
For the visitors, Sheldon Cottrell, Hayden Walsh and Fabian Allen chipped in with two wickets apiece.
The touring West Indies unit will now head to Katunayake for the official warm-up game slated to be played against the Sri Lanka Cricket Board President’s XI side on Thursday.
The opening game of the three-match One Day International series between Sri Lanka and West Indies will get underway on Saturday, at the SSC grounds in Colombo.
