Sri Lanka Test captain Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out of the 2018 Asia Cup after failing to recover from a hairline fracture he sustained on the middle finger of his right hand during the recently-concluded domestic T20 tournament.
Sri Lanka Cricket in a statement said Chandimal failed to recover in time to be part of the touring party.
Akila Dananjaya is also set to miss at least the first two games of the Asia Cup as he awaits the birth of his first child.
Earlier this month, Sri Lanka announced a 16-member squad for the Asia Cup. Fast bowler Lasith Malinga was also included in the 16-man squad, despite not having played in Sri Lanka’s provincial one-day tournament in May and June this year.
Meanwhile following the development, Chandimal has been replaced by wicketkeeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella in the 16 member squad.
Dickwella was dropped for the one-off T20 against South Africa at home last month when Chandimal returned from the ICC-imposed spirit-of-cricket suspension.
Dickwella’s omission had in fact come as a surprise, having been one of the few Sri Lankan batsmen to consistently trouble South Africa’s bowlers in the series.
He opened the innings throughout the ODIs, scoring 158 runs at an average of 31.60 and a strike rate of 82.72 – only Kusal Perera and Angelo Mathews performed better.
Sri Lanka will face Bangladesh in the tournament opener on September 15, with their next game set for September 17 against Afghanistan.
