Skipper Upul Tharanga says the victorious Sri Lankan team must improve in the fielding department but was understandably jubilant with the performances of the batsmen and bowlers at the MCG.
Sri Lanka managed to beat Australia by 5 wickets in a nail biting contest this evening.
Sri Lanka chasing a target of 169 scored 172 for 5 and surpassed the winning mark in the final delivery of the match to claim a 1-0 series lead.
In form Asela Gunaratne top scored for the Lankans with a 37 ball 52 while Dilshan Munaweera scored 44.
Earlier, the Australians were restricted to 168 for 6 after Upul Tharanga sent the hosts into bat.
Lasith Malinga who returned to the side after almost a year out of the team, picked up 2 wickets for 29.
Tharanga commended the overall performances of the team saying it was a great achievement to beat the Australians in their own conditions.
The skipper also acknowledged the support received at the MCG saying it was like playing in Colombo.
Losing captain Aaron Finch, while disappointed, commended the Sri Lankan batters for their application and approach to overhaul the target. He said the hosts will work hard to defeat the visitors in the next two matches of the series.
